The production method of wooden crafts mainly includes the following steps:
Prepare materials and tools: Choose tree species that are dense, tough, and not easily deformed, such as nanmu, rosewood, camphor, cypress, ginkgo, agarwood, mahogany, longan, etc. Prepare basic tools such as a coping saw, small knife, chisel, file, sandpaper, etc.
Design the image and sketch: First, draw a creative draft, then outline it with ink lines and enlarge it onto the wood. This step is to ensure that the carved patterns and designs are accurate.
Saw the large pieces: Use a coping saw or small knife to saw off the excess wood along the edges of the pattern to form the initial outline. This step requires careful operation to avoid damaging the wood.
Chisel the rough blank: Use a chisel and mallet or hammer to chisel out the basic shape from the rough material, forming the outer and inner contours of the work. Be careful to leave some margin to avoid difficulties in later adjustments.
Refine and polish: Use a gouge for fine processing to achieve the desired spirit of the design. Then sand with sandpaper, starting with coarse sandpaper and finishing with fine sandpaper until the surface is smooth.
Coloring and waxing: Color according to design needs, using water-based paint or acrylic paint for mixing colors. Waxing is a surface treatment method for high-end crafts, which can use different formulas of beeswax and paraffin depending on the season.
Detail carving and final adjustments: Use carving knives, utility knives, and other tools for detail carving and adjustments, ensuring that each part meets the design requirements. Finally, clean the dust with a brush to complete the work.
